First and foremost any change to your families attitudes to exercise whether they're good or bad, it all starts with you. I understand it can put a lot of pressure on parents getting your kids motivated to keep active, so here are some pointers on how to develop good exercising habits:
1. Any sportsman will tell you that exercise is the best stress reliever out there. Believe it or not going for a small walk or even getting on your bike to go to the shop is a great way of blowing off a bit of steam and can really help your mental state and can in many ways improve your attitude.
2. Moving feels wonderful! You may hate the thought of physical activity before you start, but once you get going it can feel great, and if you've ever tried working out, you'll know how great the feeling is after!
3. The stronger you are usually means the healthier you are. Fitness and well being isn't about your child's appearance, its about improving their means to survive and thrive.
4. Fun athletic activities get good grades. Many researchers have suggested that exercise improves the attention span and can help kids concentrate for longer, which obviously leads to better performance while in class.
5. Playing games or engaging in sports with friends is fun. Not only are you getting in some physical activity you get to have a bit of fun with your friends too!
6. Exercising inhibits more blood flow to your skin and scalp, leading to much nicer hair and skin.
7. Be positive about your bodies abilities, appreciate what your body is capable of and how powerful it can be. Doing this will encourage your child to do so as well.
8. Being more active and partaking in kids sports activities increases body temperature at the time you're doing it, however as time goes on your body temperature falls, as it falls you become more and more tired meaning there's more chance of a good nights sleep after all that exercising!
9. Watching sports can be great fun; participating can be even more fun. Whether it be professional, college or even little leagues. Making sport a family wide interest can spur kids on to do wonderful things in sport!
10. The more you do, the more you'll want to do. Exercising can really be a source of energy in itself, if you're feeling tired after sitting down all day, only a little bit of activity can give you a new burst of energy.
Emphasis shouldn't be on appearance, it's very likely that the more your family exercises the more attractive they will become, however this is something that should go hand in hand with physical activity, not the focal point.
